Someone once asked me a simple but convoluted question, “What do you fear?”. Before you read my answer take a moment close your eyes and ask yourself the same question. “I fear God, snakes,existential crisis and mental health problems”. Existential crises are moments when individuals question whether their lives have meaning, purpose, or value, and are negatively impacted by the contemplation. It may be commonly, but not necessarily, tied to depression or inevitably negative speculations on purpose in life.
Life begins when we are conceived in our mother’s womb and later born to the world. As human beings we seek to find purpose and meaning to our existence. This results in people asking themselves the big three questions;
- Who am I?
- What is my purpose?
- What is the meaning of life?
Causes of existential crisis in its relation to mental health
- Lose of a loved
When you lose a loved one be it a friend, relative or family a void is created in your life. The deeper your bond with the person the deeper the void in your life. Failure to fill this void creates a crisis in your own life.
- Feeling socially unfulfilled
As social beings we tend to seek acceptance, affirmation and love from the people around us. If for any reasons we lack this critical social support we crumble and eventually we fall into a crisis.
“When I grow up, I want to be a Doctor”. We all have dreams and life goals we seek to archive but not everyone archives these milestones and that’s just the reality of life. This leads to self-pity, guilt and regret hence causing a crisis in your life.
- History of bottled up emotions
When you are pumping a balloon with too much air it reaches its extensive limit and finally pops. The same thing happens with our emotions, so time to time you need to open up to other people and share your grievances and problems in order to reduce the pressure. When you bottle up emotions you are pushing yourselves to the limit and finally like a balloon you will pop.
